Feature Article - Tai Chi and Pilates "Core strength" is the new phrase touted by many fitness practices these days. It has become the new fashion concept with people flocking to Pilates, yoga and ball fitness regimes. This new "core" awareness is exciting because the development of core strength is vitally important. Using all sorts of intricate equipment, or large rubber balls of various sizes, you can now increase your inner strength and tone by working on the deep muscles of the spine. ~ Or you could practice T'ai Chi - a method used for centuries that combines stretching and strengthening exercises designed to move the entire body in fluid and meditative movements. Many t'ai chi instructors teach methods that create powerful stretching and rotational movements of the spine, one of the most important structures of the body. Sadly, spinal health is often neglected by most people. The second most common reason people miss work is lower back pain. Have you ever had back pain? The spine and deep abdominal and back muscles worked in T'ai Chi practice are the "core", with additional emphasis on posture and movement. As well, core exercises can increase muscle tone, improve breathing, increase flexibility, improve balance, reduce pain and lower stress levels. Easy T'ai Chi practice requires is no large equipment investment, no home renovations, no special clothing and if you learn by video - there are no weekly fees or classes. Remember - Tai Chi practice doesn't have to be difficult. This art is NOT about the number of movements, but about the quality of EACH move. You will receive more benefits from doing a few moves well than from struggling through dozens (or hundreds) of movements. Whatever method you use, it's a very good idea to strengthen your core. Those of you practicing Easy Tai Chi and 4 Minute Fitness routinely are already working your core. www.easytaichi.com
Food Fact Canned fish (usually tuna or salmon, but also sardines, mackerel and herring) contain all sorts of heart healthy ingredients, particularly Omega 3 polyunsaturated fats, and they contain very little cholesterol. And these little guys have all their bones, so they are a good source of calcium. Choose fish packed in water and low in salt. Fish once a week may help prevent heart attacks. Two large studies support the idea that fish (especially fatty fish) helps prevent heart disease. (Source - Berkeley Wellness Letter, July, 2002)
